Universal Passes on Stephen King ‘The Dark Tower’

I guess I was still in mourning period so I haven’t posted this till now.

Deadline reported that Universal has taken a pass on The Dark Tower, destroying current plans for a movie trilogy and tv series run. The series is based on a seven novel fantasy series by Stephen King. The the plan was for Ron Howard to direct Akiva Goldsman‘s script, with Brian Grazer, Goldsman and the author producing and Javier Bardem starring as gunslinger Roland Deschain.

That dream combination might be all but dead now. It should be no surprise that Universal passed on the project given recent history. They also passed on Guillermo Del Toro‘s At The Mountains of Madness, which was a significantly smaller investment.

Stephen King recently emailed EW telling them he wasn’t surprised Universal stepped out of the deal. He holds out hope that Ron Howard’s vision of his franchise will see the light of day.
