Oscars 2012 Nominations: Shocks and Disappointments

Posted January 24, 2012 by Max in Awards
Oscar Nomination morning is sort of like Christmas here. I kept waking up hoping that I wouldn’t miss it. That’s when you know you really love something.
Now on to the cheers and jeers.

  • The Tree Of Life for Best Picture – While there’s two other films I’d rather see nominated (TTSS or Drive), its exciting to see this challenging film get some recognition.
  • Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) for Best Actor – While his nomination had to come by knocking out some other worthy roles (incl. Micheal Fassbender in Shame) I’m so happy to see him mentioned here.
  • Nick Nolte (Warrior) for Best Supporting Actor – Warrior was such an underseen movie, there was a chance for this to be overlooked. When I came out the theater, I said Nick Nolte impressed me the most out of that terrifically cast movie and its wonderful to hear his name.
  • Man of Muppet (The Muppets) Best Song – Its sad that the academy only choose two songs this year, but Man or Muppet is one of the best movie songs since Falling Slowly, so it should easily win.

  • No Albert Brooks (Drive) for Best Supporting Actor – I understand Drive wasn’t the type of movie the Academy usually goes for, but how could they not include Albert Brooks? It’s a damn shame and I’m very disappointed.
  • Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close for Best Picture – Okay so I haven’t seen it. But this feels like Crash all over again. A quick look over at Rotten Tomatoes and Extremely Loud is rocking a 48% approval rating. I thought War Horse was a stretch, but this is just plain silly.
  • Young Adult gets nothing – Young Adult was a big risk for the studio. It had very little redeeming value. What it did have was some amazing acting from Patton Oswalt and Charlize Theron and usually Jason Reitman movies are well received by the academy.
  • No Project Nim for Best Documentary – Listen Academy, I was about to forgive you for the Senna omission, but now we aren’t talking. I thought it was a lock to win the category nevermind not getting nominated.
