Lionsgate Buys ‘Dead Island’ Movie Rights – Based On the Trailer

Posted September 27, 2011 by Max in Film News

The trailer for ‘Dead Island‘ shook the internet earlier this year, making some vocal fans announce it was the best zombie film they’d seen in years. While that is debatable, the widespread effect of the trailer has made some wealthy people light up their eyes with dollar signs.

According to slashfilm, But now the rights have been sold, and Lionsgate is the buyer. Thing is, Sean Daniel, the guy who was originally reported by HitFix to be the first rights buyer, will produce the film. The idea is to make Dead Island “an innovation of the zombie genre because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling.”

This seems pretty clear to me that they bought the rights to the title and are going to create something like the trailer and not the underwhelming video game. If they could come close to the tension in the original trailer they might have a winner, but I expect it will just be a generic zombie feature with the ‘Dead Island‘ name.
