Earlier this year, I took the plunge and watched Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. I had heard nothing but raves for the films and after finally seeing them I wonder what took me so long. Feeling similar to Lost in Translation and Certified Copy, the films followed Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy through a romance that was perfect, but could never work due to different stages in their lives. Both the first and second film end on cliffhangers leaving the question of whether they will truly be together or not.
Ethan Hawke might finally have plans to tie up the loose ends of this romance. In an interview to the French publication AlloCine [via Vulture], Hawke said that he thought it was just about time he, Delpy, and their director, Richard Linklater — the threesome who co-wrote the previous films — got started on a third.
While I would love for them to get together finally after all these years, there’s something bittersweet about their romance that might be lost. I have confidence that they won’t mess it up though because the chemistry between Hawke and Delpy is what sells both films for me. They seem perfect for each other. Hopefully there’s more news about this potential sequel to Before Sunset soon.
Would you enjoy another Before Sunrise film? Should they just leave well enough alone?
