Your Ticket Inside the Movies

What Have You Been Watching? #1

Posted June 25, 2012 by Max in Discuss

Every Monday I’ll bring up this post so we can talk about what we watched over the weekend. I’d enjoy hearing what new movies, games, or televisions shows were seen over the weekend. This is what I’ve been watching this weekend.

This was a much more productive weekend in terms of consuming media.

What Have You Been Watching?

June 25th 2012 Edition

Brave – (Review) While it’s not the best picture Pixar has ever made, their movies are still a class above any other animation. Check out the review for more thoughts on this one.

Moonrise Kingdom – Review coming tomorrow. Very impressed with this picture. Probably my favorite Wes Anderson film that I’ve seen (Note: I haven’t seen that many). Even though I know the locations it was shot, it does an incredible job with its sense of place. Also, the quirkiness that Wes Anderson is known for is in full force.

Safety Not Guaranteed – I remember seeing the trailer for this one and being interested. Other than that I’m not sure why I really had to see this, but it was a wonderful idea. Don’t ask me to pit Moonrise against this movie even though I saw them back-to-back. Review for this will be coming later this week.

Ready Player One – (Amazon Link) Ernest Cline (writer of Fanboys Script) created a new book entitled Ready Player One. It was on bookshelves last August, but the paperback edition just came out. I had heard it recommended to another video-game fan and I knew I had to try it out. It’s a mixture of Willy Wonka and the Japanese animation film Summer Wars. Using 80’s trivia and pop-culture knowledge, a group of online adolescents must race against the clock to find a mystical egg that will make the finder all-powerful in the online world called OASIS.  I loved the book and finished it within a week. I’d highly recommend it to anyone with fond memories of the 80’s.

Video Games:

Pinball FX 2 (Avengers tables) – Pinball FX 2 is a platform on Xbox live used to buy virtual pinball tables. All the tables must be bought. In this case, I bought four new tables based on The Avengers universe. One of the tables is based off the movie. They are a lot of fun, although their physics and design don’t mirror a real simulation. A true simulation can be found in Pinball Arcade, but this is a fun diversion.

Civilization V: Gods & Kings – The new expansion for Civilization V. It’s changes the hit points, religion, and espionage aspects of the game. As well as adding nine new civilizations. I’m having a lot of fun with it and I imagine it will take up a lot of my free time this summer. With this Diablo 3, Mass Effect 3 DLC, and Skyrim DLC, there’s plenty of games to play this summer.

Passion Pit – Saw Passion Pit Friday night. They are best known for the songs Sleepyhead and Little Secret. Power was lost at the venue till around 8:45pm (an hour late). They seemed like they phoned the performance in. It wasn’t that good. Although I did like the aforementioned songs live.

Now it’s your turn! What did you watch this weekend?
