Awards Coverage 2011-2012 Starts Now

Posted November 3, 2011 by Max in Awards

With November already here, so begins the hard-hitting films positioned for Academy Award greatness. Over the coming months, I’ll be looking into the state of the race and keep up on what films are still alive in the coveted Best Picture category. In order to get started, let’s look at recent years’ winners, films released this year that have the best chance, and the films that haven’t been seen yet this year.

Recent Winners

2007 – The Departed

2008 – No Country for Old Men

2009 – Slumdog Millionaire

2010 – The Hurt Locker

2011 – The King’s Speech

Let’s take a look at what the Gurus o’ Gold have determined the state of the race:

There’s few surprises thus far in the race. The Descendants and The Artist continue to be universally loved and praised by critics; whether that turns into critics awards at the end of the year remains to be seen. I would be especially interested if this praise holds true for The Artist, because no matter how special it is, it is still a Black&White silent picture. War Horse has started playing for various cities and there have been raves for that as expected. War Horse would seem to be the film to beat this year when all is said and done, given the Spielberg factor and the Tony award-winning play factor but as films continue to open in more markets we’ll get a bigger picture.
